Hair clogs are common in every bathroom but here are a few things you can do to prevent them!
Install Drain Covers
Drain covers can be a great way to prevent clogs from ever happening. There are two types of Drain Covers, Top Drain screens and Underneath Drain Screens. Installing a Top Drain screen is as easy as placing the appropriate size screen over top your drain. You can also go for the Underneath drain screen which you can install beneath your current drain cover. Install these screens by removing the drain cover, placing the screen in the middle of the pipe, fastening it in place with plumber’s putty (if necessary), and reinstalling the drain cover

Keep hair away from sinks and showers
Keeping hair away from your sinks and showers is also a great way to prevent hair clogs. One way to do this is to brush your hair before heading into the shower. This will remove any loose or unattached hair reducing the amount that falls in your shower. Also when shaving over the sink to keep the water running for an extra minute or so when you’re done. This will allow hair to make its way through the pike and not get stuck.
How to clear out hair clogs
Once per month, pour one cup of baking soda directly into the drain you wish. Afterward, pour one cup of vinegar (white or apple cider) directly into the drain. It’s going to bubble up passed the drain, so don’t be alarmed! Allow this to sit for a few minutes and then pour one or more cups of boiling water directly into the drain opening to clear any broken up debris. Also After installing drain screens, it’s just as important to clear them out every week or so. You can simply throw on a pair of gloves, reach your hand into them, and pull the hair out. For the under the cover drains screens, you’ll have to unscrew the drain cover to clear out the screen.
Sometimes despite your best efforts, these clogs can be too much for just baking soda, vinegar, and your hand. When these clogs occur be sure to give Smith Drain Solutions a call at 410-938-7642 or book an appointment on our website here!
