A slow draining shower or bathtub can be extremely frustrating and can have several different causes such as; lack of regular drain cleaning, a build-up of hair, or a build-up of soaps or other beauty aids. When this happens most people reach for the chemical drain cleaner right away, STOP. There are safer and more effective ways to clear your bath or shower drains. As we have said in previous post chemical drain cleaners are awful for both your pipes and the environment.
The first thing we need to do is remove your drain stopper, which also may be partly causing your slow draining. There quite a few different drain stoppers and you can identify/learn how to remove yours with this article.
Now we have your stopper remove its time to get clear your drain. First get out an old metal clothes handle with a hook bent into is an end and use it to go down into your pipes and pull out any potential clogs. Be careful not to push it any farther down potentially making it worse.
After you have most of the clog removed you can make an environmentally and pipe friendly homemade Drain Cleaner. You will need hot water, vinegar, baking soda, and salt. Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/4 cup table salt and pour down the drain. Follow that up by pouring 1 cup of heated vinegar down the drain. Wait 15 mins and then pour down a pot of boiling water or just turn on the tap to hot to clear out the remaining debris. If you’re still experiencing slow draining a toilet plunger may provide a cure or get out the drain auger. Snaking a drain can be a very effective way to reach deeper into your pipes and removing clogs.
